Carbon cleaning

Carbon cleaning can mean several different jobs. We look at where deposits are, the engine and the symptoms before discussing the right way to reach and clean them.

Equipment used for intake carbon cleaning

Why carbon builds up

Deposits can accumulate in the intake system and on accessible inlet valves. The rate and location depend on the engine, fuel system, condition and how the vehicle is used.

A rough idle, hesitation or loss of performance can have other causes. We assess the concern before assuming deposits are responsible.

Choose the right cleaning method

Walnut blasting physically removes deposits from suitable accessible inlet ports and valves after the necessary intake components are removed. Suitable removed components may be cleaned separately using ultrasonic equipment.

DPF cleaning concerns a filter in the exhaust; it is a different job from cleaning intake valves. External steam cleaning removes surface dirt rather than deposits inside the intake.

Assessment and access

Tell us the registration, engine, mileage, fuel type and symptoms. We can discuss previous fault reports, photographs and work already carried out.

Access and dismantling vary between engines. We explain the proposed work, any additional diagnostic testing and the estimate before proceeding.

Will cleaning fix a running fault?

Cleaning may help when deposits are contributing to the problem, but it cannot repair a failed injector, sensor or mechanical component. A misfire or warning light is not proof that cleaning alone will solve the fault.

If the vehicle has an engine or gearbox problem, start with the free supported engine-system code scan and initial assessment. Further diagnosis, dismantling and repairs are agreed separately.

Discuss your car

Tell us what you need and we’ll discuss suitability and the next step.

Bring your own parts. We'll fit them. Buy suitable parts yourself and pay the supplier directly. You keep any saving on the parts price; we provide a separate estimate for fitting.
